Getting a website for your business

December 12, 2006 | Author: Eve Lester | Filed under: Design, Money Matters

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

If you plan on running a home business, one of the early steps you should be taking is getting a domain name and hosting, this does not have to be an expensive task. But it should be done early so you can begin the design and promotion asap, as it can take months to get listed in some searches.

Once you have picked a business name (i usually do this on the computer, searching for each idea as I think of it because you want it to be avail as a domain name as well if possible.) then you need to get hosting, I have been using register.com for every one of my sites, it is only $6.95 a year for a domain name and hosting is only 5.95 a month. The reason I initially went with them was because I could not afford at the time to pay for a full year, and they offer a month to month plan, as well as any increment you need. I recently upgraded to 6 months at a time, and will go to a year next. I have never had any problems, and support is always helpful when I need them.

You want to compare options on any hosting plan you choose, like if you plan on blogging, check to see if it is built in, with register.com, they have wordpress built in. You can also add several domains to the hosting, each one having its own folder, like on here I have dillydesigns.com, then I have homebizblogger.com which points to a folder called homebizblogger as well as Joseph’s site joesrants.com with its own folder. Those are essentially 3 separate websites, not connected unless I link them together, for only 5.95 a month. I have yet to use even 1% of my bandwidth and am only at 2% of space. You can also have up to 9 or so subdomains like http://eve.dillydesigns.com

Ok, enough raving about them, they are my number one recommendation for hosting/domain names, but there are a ton of companies out there, be sure to do your research and read the contract wherever you do go, and ask if you have any questions.
