When you are running or starting your business, you will need to look into getting a website. The options for this are endless. You have to pick a domain name, choose .net or .com, or even .edu etc. Then you have to find hosting. Most people think that price is the most important thing when choosing a host. Actually, it comes down to alot more than that. Alot depends on what you are wanting to do; for instance, if you are planning on running an extensive shopping cart website with frequent updates and additions, will you be spending alot of time on marketing? Things like this will require more space, databases, lots of bandwidth, etc.
You will also need to decide if you will go with shared or dedicated hosting, and this is where it can get tricky, and costly. But can also be well worth it.
The differences between shared hosting and dedicated hosting are numerous, and if your able to afford it, go with dedicated. With shared hosting, your website is stored on the same server as numerous other websites, this is not always a problem, but when something does happen, it is big, depending on the company, you run the fear of a virus, another big problem is if your ‘neighbor’ is spamming, than your email address can possibly get blocked from popular email programs as well, as you share some of the same ‘ip address’.
With Dedicated Hosting your website has its own server, not shared with anyone, which allows for it to be faster, safer and bigger. You do not have to worry of ‘what is my neighbor doing’ or worrying about problems nearly as much. Downtime is reduced significantly. The cost however is higher. Dedicated hosting is great for sites with large databases, shopping carts, traffic and those that are fast growing.
As with all aspects of a business, do your research, some reccommended places to get hosted that I have found are;
Homestead.com - Get a website for $9.95 a month.
Do it yourself Web site starts as low as $3.27 per month at Register.com!
Those are also pretty cheap so they definitely win in my book! :-)
