Using Auction Ads

| July 30th, 2007

auction adsI recently signed up with AuctionAds to see how well they work as a secondary income model. I have yet to use them on my sites, as I don’t think they would do well on either of the sites I have currently. But I will be using them on a niche site. The concept is simple, you pick some keywords and they display ebay auction on your site. If a person clicks on the ad and takes action, be it winning a bid, new user registration, or even buy-it-now you are paid the commission. They pay 100% of the ebay commission revenue. Ebays commission varies, here is a quote from the EBay site;

Earn between 50% and 75% of eBay’s Revenue (not item sale price) on Winning Bids or Buy It Now (BIN) transactions.
Earn between $25.00 and $35.00 for each new eBay active user (ACRU)

Sounds pretty good huh? Say you are running a product review site, offering up reviews on digital cameras; if you have good content, not an overload of ads, and a decent amount of traffic. You could potentially make alot of money. Just be sure to target your keywords well when setting up ads, this way you get a good amount of matched products. Below is an example of an ad I created using the keywords- books, budgeting

All in all, this seems like a great way for a niche website to earn some extra income. For those of you who have been using Auction adds as blog income, what have been your results?

    I have been using Auction Ads on my wedding blog for the past three weeks. So far, it is getting a great click through rate, but no sales. I think it is a great idea, but you have to keep in mind that you are sending people to auctions, so there is less of a chance of them buying (and thus giving you a commission), since they could easily lose the auction. Hopefully, we will all see some sales in the near future, though!

    Yes, hopefully! Have you tried adsense in the same spot? Maybe get a program to alternate the auction ads and adsense in the same location and see what you do better on. Adsense is never as targeted, but it would be a good experiment! :-)

    I didn’t know about the Auction Ads program. I have used ebay’s affiliate program with the buildanichestore script. Its done okay, but I think there are a lot of variables that affect getting the commission.

    Thanks for the comment Kyle, I think the big difference in ebay’s program and auction ads program is that auction ads handles all of the variables that keep you from getting paid. I have heard they are more reliable than ebay because they deal on such a bulk order, they don’t have to answer those pesky little questions that you or I would have. I like the idea that you can have the context keyword links, takes a lot of the work away!
