As part two in the Off-line Business Opportunity Series we are going to cover the field of Professional Organizing. This is a field I love, and if I lived in a different town, I would be doing this in a heartbeat. I could probably get some jobs around here if I tried, but I would much rather not I would have to severely undercharge to get any business. That just goes to show you that sometimes, location really matters. Alway think about your area when looking into off line business ideas, what may go well in a large town may bomb in a small town, and vice versa.
If you are a organized person, and love to organize, this one is for you. From organizing for businesses to helping organize someones garage, you have so many opportunities for this business. If you already watch shows like Clean Sweep, and other HGTV shows on organizing you already have some knowledge of how to organize. You will want to go to all the local office supply stores and pick up catalogs, to sit down with clients and select any needed organizing tools, like file cabinets, trays, racks, and more.
The only start up money you will need is for advertising, if any. Your best bet is to run a ad in your local newspaper to see what kind of response you get. Before doing this however, you have some things to iron out. You will also want to look into joining the association - linked below- to have a higher credibility with clients. There are no education requirements for this field so it is one of the easiest ones to get into, bot because it is so easy to get into you will need to visit every site and buy every book to stand out from the crowd.
As a professional organizer you will be held up to higher standards by a client than a friend walking into your home. When meeting with clients you need to look your absolute best, wear a nice business suit to the first meeting if you are sure you will not be working that day. On days that you will be working you need to wear a nice outfit that is comfortable and able to get dirty. Like I said, keep magizines handy to order products on, even things like cabinet hardware and fixtures need to be around, as you are not only helping organize the space but helping make it nice and pretty.
You will want to do alot of research on the subject and books are the best way to go. There are some websites, like OnlineOrganizing.com and The National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) that will have some great information to get you started.
Some books I recommend are Everything You Need to Know About a Career as a Professional Organizer, A Manual For Professional Organizers
, and FabJob Guide to Become a Professional Organizer (FabJob Guides)
. These books will each help in different ways, where one will talk about what to charge and how to advertise this field, another will talk about how to actually do the work quicker and more efficiently.
There are also E-Books on the subject (they have ebooks for just about anything now!) The best looking one I found is Becoming A Professional Organizer the rest looked a little spammy.
