Tis the Season for Giving to Goodwill

November 21, 2007 | Author: Rob | Filed under: What I am Doing

As I woke up today I was thrilled to see a fresh white blanket as far as my tired eyes could see. Not sure if my sarcasm is apparent but I”m really not that thrilled at all. Sure it’s fun but the novelty quickly fades. I don’t mind snow on ski slopes or in the mountains but when it happens in the city its just ugly. You have to scrape your car, you have no traction, and did I mention it’s cold?

With Christmas around the corner now is a perfect time to give your closets a quick trim and find whatever you don’t need anymore to give to goodwill. Unfortunately this time of year is very tough for those without the means to purchase winter clothing let alone Christmas presents if they celebrate it. When the deep cold hits it’s a system shock even for lifetime residents let alone new citizens. I can’t imagine someone who left a warm climate and now has to deal with this. If you don’t have the right gear you’ll have a very long and miserable winter.

Some things in particular that I know are put to good use:

- Any type of winter jacket, sweaters and snow pants
- Hats, Mitts, Gloves, Scarfs
- Boots, Hiking Boots anything to keep your feet dry

Salvation Army

A friend of mine moved down south this year for good and left tones of clothes; especially lots of winter ones. I’m going to be dropping all of them off today. A few jackets, hats etc… I also dropped off tones of shoes and shirts earlier this summer.

Besides the obvious benefits of helping those who need it; cleaning out your closet also has some other mental health benefits. If you wish to be free in life you often must lighten your load. It’s funny how we are born with nothing but have this instinct to keep hoarding and amassing material possessions. I’ve had my house burn down before and what you realize is that nothing material matters. Regardless of how dear you held some items to your heart; once they are gone they are quickly forgotten. Something that you couldn’t live without suddenly doesn’t matter. If anything material possessions weigh you down in my opinion. They act as artificial anchors for us in this world; “I can’t leave because …”

If you have a few minutes and clothes that you don’t have a use for anymore; give donating them a thought. All those clothes that you keep for a special occasion but whenever you try them on they go right back on the hanger because they don’t fit right, look right etc… Also if you haven’t worn something for 2 years or more; it’s a perfect candidate to be donated!
