Smallest Laptop Computer Ever by ASUS

Along comes the Asus EEE PC 4G it’s only 7″ wide and weighs less than 1kg! It also comes preloaded with many practical everyday applications. A friend of mine Mike Saf bought it and blogged about it and I’ve had my eye on it since. The beauty of it is according to him that it can fit in the cargo pocket of his pants. The portability is amazing if you were say traveling the world or just bringing it back and forth from school or work.

The standard model comes with 512MB of RAM and has an attractive price tag at ~$399US+tax. If you live in Canada it will be available through The Source by order as of December 12th. You can of course upgrade it to meet your specs if you demand more power. Click here to view a youtube video showing you what this gadget is all about.

You should be warned though that it only has 900mhz which by todays standards is quite slow and it will run Windows XP but it does not come pre-installed. This lack of power on the basic version in my mind is a bit of a turn off. I’m sure it’s upgradeable to a powerhouse but in the process you will most likely be ballooning it’s price. It does strike me as the perfect starter machine for children or adults with rather simple computing needs.

Asus EEE Laptop

I like this laptop and think it would be a great 2nd laptop if you were so inclined. Since it’s so small I can see it giving you hand cramps if you had to type out a large paper or do a lot of work on it. Also it’s lack of power would makes it totally unacceptable as a web development tool in my opinion. It does have a monitor plug and some USB’s so you could plugin your monitor, mouse and keyboard to make computing easier.

Once I get a new laptop I’ll consider this for when I’m going to someone’s cottage, camping or even better if I plan on doing some globe-trotting. If you’re on the road you want to be light and chances are you won’t be designing any sites but just checking stats and posting the occasional message. It also could be a first computer for those who use computers strictly for word processing and internet browsing.

I just found an interesting article which stated one of these are selling at the rate of one every 6 seconds! I think Asus really has a winner here with a product that is not only extremely portable but also affordable.

I so want one of these! And a second one for Caspar. It’s just the right size.

I have had one now for about 3 months and I LOVE it!!!! Boots like a dream and is increadibly portable. I even experimented with changing the pre-installed OS to Ubuntu and although sort of fun… really for the uber-geek to mess around with as it’s not as user freindly with the out-of the box linux it comes with so went back to that OS.

Note… if you are a big fan of Youtube, it can be a bit picky if you try and jump from page to page there a lot but otherwise. 9 out of 10. Keyboard is tricky but you get used to it.
