Government Grants for Small Businesses

January 10, 2008 | Author: Rob | Filed under: Business Advice

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Let’s talk about something I love - Government Grants for Small Businesses. I also love other people’s money when doing a venture to help spread the risk. What’s better then starting a business and having the government help pay to get it going?

I first learnt about gov grants for small businesses when I was in Calgary, Alberta Canada. I was at a tradeshow and one of the gents who worked in catering started chatting with me as the show was dead and my booth was near the door they came through.  His best advice was when applying for one speak in government terms which is very general.

Governments have grants for MANY things they just don’t publicize it too much. You’ll also have a hard time finding lot’s of information online. You will find some but most of them are basically people who have done the homework and now want to sell you the information.

If you are serious about an idea you may want to just send the paypal payment and wait; if you get accepted for a grant it would be totally worth it and if not at least you tried?

Personally whenever I do anything like that the MINUTE I hit send payment I start looking online for free. (Why I don’t do it the other way around I’ll never know). Either way my personal advice would be to contact your local government and go from there.

Contact a local MP if you must but there IS $$$ to be given out. Grants are similar in my opinion to corporate welfare. That being said if you want a grant try and make sure your idea not only is beneficial to the country you’re living but also it helps if it creates jobs locally.

I was going to contact the Canadian Government about a Hemp procurement businesses. Basically hemp has 25,000 uses and could take on petroleum as well for bio fuel but I’m not going to bore you with that.

When contacting a local MP or government agency; be sure that you already have an idea written down as they will probably ask you a lot of questions and then ask you to submit something written.

The fact of the matter is that if you want to start something that is beyond your scope but beneficial to the territory that you live in chances are if you’re from a respectable democratic country it’s worth a shot.

I did some searching online and came up with this site here. I linked to a page of recipients; as you can see the size of the grant and application vary.

I also called them up. It’s 486$ for what I believe to be a 7 year update as well as access to a business plan maker etc…

Frankly I’m pretty sure the Canadian Gov won’t be giving me $$$ to help build my online dynasty for the sole purpose of me relocation to a tropical climate. If you have plans to do something locally and features some of the aspects mentioned above $486 could be a drop in the bucket if you receive a large grant; if not it’s a write-off for your business. ( I know I know write-off’s still take $$ out of your pocket!)

Regardless of the size or scope of your business idea it is totally possible so never let lack of money come into the picture; money will flow endlessly to to a good idea; always has and always will and most of the sources will only become apparent when you are ready for them.

Best of luck and if anyone here does get a grant; please let me know how it went!

Dear Sirs,
I am Thomas Garcia and I am new to this forum. I didn’t find relevant
thread to post this, and I apologize in advance, if I posted in the wrong place,
please advise the right
thread.
Early last year, I stumbled upon information about
investment funds, that are rarely published on
official investment resources. The rates of investment
return, which participants could
receive by investing in such
funds, looked
extremely high at
first, but as I learned more feedbacks about them, I joined some too. Today, I consider
myself to become the successful
entrepreneur. To take my online adventures on the next level, I
made available the blog, which
provides detailed information
about real investment
funds. You can see my current picks, here is the link. I would would be glad to receive
user’s comments.

Few months ago, I came across information about
investment programs, that are rarely published on
official investment resources. The earnings, which one could
receive by joining in such private clubs, appeared
unrealistically high at
first, but as I searched more feedbacks about them, I joined some too. Today, I consider
myself as no less, but the successful
investor. To
share my findings, I
established the blog, which
is always updated with detailed information
about investment
programs. If you would like to see it, here is the link.
I would appreciate
your comments.
