If I had Only 1 Hour to Make a Site I Would…

I was thinking about all the success and failures I’ve had online and what some of the biggest roadblocks to success were. Sadly I think that most sites fail because they fail to plan. I’m guilty and I’m sure many of you reader’s are as well!

You find a good idea and you’re so zealous about it that you just start running. Start registering domains, setting up hosting all before you figured out what pages you’re going to have, how they are going to be organized etc… The problem with this technique is that you have no concrete plan so whenever you see a conceivably better term or something of the like it changes your plan and lets doubt creep in. Doubt and fear are cousins which steal efficiency and confidence.

Basically I’d spend a good 50 minutes of the one hour deciding on exactly what keyterms to target; what domain name would play best to all the terms targeted, how I plan on setting it up and linking it on the site. Once that is done it’s basically building. You don’t see construction workers playing with the blueprint while they are building do you? Then why would you play with yours when building a site?

Websites are essentially virtual real estate so if you approach jobs as such it changes the dimension and increases your chances at success. Plan, Plan, Plan. Be 100% sure before you ever make a single keystroke of construction.

This is just a message or a word from the wise. I’ve wasted tones of opportunities and more importantly time changing ideas half way through or when I stumble into the first real roadblock because I didn’t thoroughly plan the whole development out. Planning is your best friend and if you’re looking to get some targeted traffic just accept you can’t be everything to everyone. A page / site optimized for dozens of terms will probably get less traffic then one optimized for a few terms but optimized well.

So in summary if I had 1 hour to build a site I’d spend 50 min on keyword research and planning then the actual building takes very little time and energy once you are 100% sure of what you want to build, accomplish and how.

Plan and plan well or you’re planning to fail; it’s been said before and it will be said again simply because it’s so true.

Thanks for the kind words Paul. Also remember the worse your attention span the more crucial a detailed plan is

That was a great post and very true. A little planning goes a long way. I’ve learned from my past mistakes with some of my other sites and have learned to be a lot more focused and organized and it’s definitely paying off.

It takes a little effort like you said but the payout is so long lasting.
Thanks again for that insightful post!
