Moderate Spam Comments to Bad Neighborhoods or Else…
| April 10th, 2009This is a quick piece on why you should always moderate and take care of spam comments to bad neighborhoods on your blogs.
People like myself like to sell. I don’t care much for maintenance be it a website or mowing my lawn. As a result I rarely do either. I was flipping through some sites and found unholy amounts of spam comments both in moderation and live on my site.
The comments here are dofollow because I’ve never gotten around to making them “nofollow” whether I think comments should be follow or nofollow is irrelevant but if you leave them as dofollow (standard with wordpress install) you best mind your comments.

We all know linking to bad neighborhoods aka the internet ghetto’s aka the internet slums can affect how engines treat your site. After all online is much like life you’re compared to those you hang out with or even “judged” at times by those who think they are better but most likely are just more insecure.
If you let your blog become a link farm for crappy c1al1s and v1@gr@ sites and such you’re bound to feel the wrath of “Uncle Search Engine” and why not? Why should you have special trust bestowed when you’re doing nothing to earn it / keep that trust? “You are who you link to”.

Why am I bringing this up? Is it because it’s a Friday night and I have nothing better to do? Perhaps. Or I just felt like blogging for the sake of blogging and unlike many of my bloggeries this has a clear message. The message is mind your comments and other outbound links on your site or the engines may give you a stern reprimanding.
Would you allow links to bad neighborhoods in your bloggerie(posts) themselves? Heck no; then why is it ok to leave dozens or hundreds (sigh) from your blog? It’s basically the same thing and equally as reprehensible.
There was a PR update recently and this little piggy got none. Ironically we’re still crushing our main keyword but we don’t have the power to pass on trust because we haven’t done squat to keep it.
Keep working for yourself,
Rob

“you are who you link to” - LOL!
Rob, great post, man!
I like the sarcastic tone and the slum comparison, I’ll keep reading it, if you plan on maintaining it well-linked

Nice post! I hate SPAM whether it be on one of my sites or in a can
. I did not realized that spam comment in moderation were a bad thing to. But maintenance is key, an a must if you want something to grow.
Thanks for the comments. It’s important and a quick way to get in the “bad books”. I have lots of maintenance to do on this blog in that regard and not looking forward to it!
I hear you rob! Having my site added to the list of do-follow blogs was a baaaad idea! I am now nofollow and working on better spam control, it takes forever!
Really good points. I always moderate and delete spam quickly and did not realize how important it was to keep those deleted in moderation too. Thanks for the pointers. Just like email, keeping your website up to date should be a daily thing so it is a routine and a system so that it is not a big process everytime.
Agreed. The more readers you have, the more maintenance to do.
I agree with what you said. Thanks for a bright idea.
Hello, great post. Even though I have read this kind of articles a dozen times you have given it a new twist. I also moderate all my comments even though I have akismet plugin installed. Some spammer can outwit akismet and create a lot of links on their comments.

You moderate your comments but how about Russian comments on this post ;-) They seems like a Spam, nothing informational ))
editing the comments can take a lot of time but the good comments can be helfpul - so its a decision each website makes
You really have to be ware , who is the spammer and who is not!
Sometimes , the comments has nothing to do with post! but still, we cant delete it!
do i look like spammer?
Yes, you are right about moderating comments. ‘linking to bad neighborhoods’ - that’s a good one. I hope I am not the bad link here.

Very helpfull article, and I notice that i works for you.. very little spam here..
When I began my first blog, a long time ago now it seems I failed to understand why “CiaslisViagraFree” and the like even bothered to comment. Pretty quickly I understood why. My comments are still dofollow, but I monitor them constantly.
The more readers you have may mean more maintenance but it reminds me of a thought I frequently have which is “I love the frustration of running and maintaining my business” because if there was no frustration there would be no business. Great article!

Outbound links should always be controlled and sometimes have a direct relationship to inbound links. Of course, it’s also true that as your traffic increases so may inappropriate content and it requires constant maintenance to present your online business in the light you would like it to be perceived.
Well you are now on the first page in google when searched make money from home blog. Hence how I found you!
So the spam on your site does not seem to effect what page your blog is placed in google.
I use blogger, so I can moderate the posts before the get posted. (thank-goodness)
I will never be a no follow site because I think anyone posting a good comment on my site deserves the backlink
Btw, I am not spam lol I put you in my favorites, expect more comments from me from time to time
